The First Domino

In the October HomeNE webinar, Jeffrey Tanner of Canton, South Dakota shared the story of the Liberty Park housing development, highlighting how strong leadership served as the “first domino” that transformed a long-recognized housing need into action. He outlined the community’s six-year journey through developer changes, financing challenges, and negative growth perceptions, emphasizing the importance of persistence, partnerships, and positive community advocacy. The project is now bringing new housing opportunities to Canton through a mix of single-family and multi-family developments supported by grants, TIF, and private investment.
